Tumaini Orphan Care Program

Today there are over 40 million orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa, with more than 1.5 million in Kenya alone.

As we hear those horrendous statistics, God calls us in Psalms 82.  We have been given an ongoing relationship with our Presbyterian brothers and sisters, therefore we have a unique opportunity “…to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”  James 1:27. We are called for growth on our inward journey of faith and our outward journey of service to a deepening of our discipleship to Jesus Christ recognizing it is a journey of grace from beginning to end.

Orphans in Africa are usually taken in and cared for by relatives of their extended family.  Today, AIDS has ravaged the adult population so that relatives who might be living only at a subsistence level are overwhelmed with care taking of many children.  Also, unrelated adults take in orphans in the community even when they are living in poverty.

Tumaini2Through our partnership with the Kibwezi, Kenya area congregations, we are building an outreach program that supports the extended family and fosters community relationships.  By providing food and school supplies to orphans, we can ensure these children are cared for while minimizing reliance on full time institutional care.

A rescue home, Tumaini--which means hope in Swahili--provides a resident home when circumstances deem it necessary.

You can help us answer the call to meet the needs of the growing number of orphans in the Kibwezi area.

  • Pray for our Tumaini staff and volunteers in Kibwezi and here.
  • Consider sponsoring a child. Your individual or group sponsorship of about $400 per year will provide sufficient funds for school tuition, uniform, food, medical, and miscellaneous support to one orphaned child in Kibwezi.  Make contributions in checks to Burke Presbyterian Church at the above address.  Memo line: Tumaini Orphan Care Project.
