Sunday Morning Adult Education
Sunday Morning Adult Education
Classes are offered from 9:50 to 10:50 a.m. on Sundays on a quarterly cycle. Classes cover a wide range of topics including Bible study, theology, social issues, and special topics such as world religions, elder care, and literature. The meditation room is always available for quiet prayer and contemplation.
We sponsor a weekly lecture series on Tuesday evenings during the season of Lent. We share a simple soup supper, listen to a speaker, and have discussion. Past series have examined Discovering Everyday Spirituality, A Beautiful Thing: Exploring the Creative and Liturgical Arts (2007), The Jesus We Never Knew: Who Jesus was and the message of his ministry, death and resurrection (2006), Serving God, Serving Country: Living Your Faith in Turbulent Times (2005), Profiles in Courage and Hope (2004), The Problem of Evil (2003), Prayer and the Holy Spirit (2002), Faith at Work (2001), and Issues of the New Millennium (2000).
Advent and Lenten Devotional Booklets
These are made available for each of these seasons of the church year. The Lenten booklet contains daily devotionals written by members of the congregation.
One day is set aside from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the season of Advent and again during the season of Lent as a time of quiet prayer and meditation at the church. The labyrinth is set up in the Meeting House and appropriate reading material is laid out in the library and classrooms. Coffee, soup, and light refreshments are provided all day.
Library
Burke Presbyterian Church maintains an excellent library available for use by the congregation. It includes Bible commentaries, reference books, videos, and contemporary books for adults, youth, and children.
The canvas labyrinth is a replica of one created circa 1200 as part of the stone floor of the cathedral at Chartres, France. Unlike a maze, there are no false trails on a labyrinth. A single path leads to the center and back out; the entrance is also the exit. Entering the labyrinth, one steps into holy time. See the labyrinth page for the schedule.
The outdoor labyrinth is a smaller, more primitive design than our indoor labyrinth. It is open for walking anytime in the Memorial Garden near the parking lot entrance.
Special Classes and Seminars
BPC periodically offers a variety of special classes and seminars that are designed to nurture adult spiritual growth. These include marriage enrichment workshops, parenting courses, book studies, courses on elder care, and Equipping the Saints, a curriculum for the nurture and training of teachers.
