Throughout Lent in 2020, we will together engage in an exciting book study. We invite you to join us in reading Rachel Held Evan’s Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again. As a young adult, Evans, after having grown up in an evangelical church in the Bible Belt, began to question her long-held beliefs. She moved from a faith of certainty to one that welcomed doubt and questioning, from one that was exclusive to one that was radically inclusive. In the introduction of Inspired, Evans describes the time when the “once upon a time” stories of the Bible that she had learned and loved all came unraveled. The following pages trace both her personal journey and the biblical story as she rediscovered and fell in love with the Bible again. “When you stop trying to force the Bible to be something it’s not — static, perspicacious, certain, absolute — then you’re free to revel in what it is: living, breathing, confounding, surprising, and yes, perhaps even magic.” Evans died last year, tragically, at the age of 37. She left behind the gift of seeing a 2,000-year-old religion with fresh eyes. We hope you will join us in the reading and conversation: Discussions will take place at 10:15 am on Sundays, March 1-April 5.
