Clifton Presbyterian Church and Newton Presbyterian Church also contribute to this orphan care.
Carol Rithaa, who is a nurse by profession, was hired in 2004 as program coordinator. She prepares the budget, serves as secretary to the Tumaini Orphan Care Board, visits the orphans’ families, counsels both the children and their extended families, and tracks the children’s current and future educational opportunities.
Orphans in the Community
TOCP provides food, school fees and uniforms to children living with extended family, a tradition that is the cultural preference for Kenyans.
To care for the orphans for whom outreach care in an extended family was not feasible, a small home was built on the grounds of the Kibwezi Educational Center in 2006. A second floor is nearing completion. Five children live in the home with a house mother. They attend the primary school on campus and eat their meals at the school dining hall.
Orphans who Board
Six students are old enough to live in the dorms at the Kibwezi Center. Several board in various secondary schools. The orphans return to their extended families during school breaks. Carol
delivers maize and beans to the families each month. The pastor of the Bethel Church also visits the families for prayer and pastoral care.
Eight young people we have assisted have completed secondary school or the Kibwezi polytechnic. On a case-by-case basis they are being assisted with continued education or training through additional donations from BPC families. Dripping Springs Presbyterian Church has donated first year college expenses for another student.
How to Help
You can help us answer the call to meet the needs of the growing number of orphans in the Kibwezi area.
- Pray for our Tumaini staff and volunteers in Kibwezi and here.
- Consider sponsoring a child. Your individual or group sponsorship of about $500 per year will provide sufficient funds for school tuition, uniform, food, medical, and miscellaneous support to one orphaned child in Kibwezi. Make contributions in checks to Burke Presbyterian Church at the above address. Memo line: Tumaini Orphan Care Project.
